Paisanos itinerantes es una indagación sin precedentes en las experiencias de los campesinos y peones, de la provincia de Buenos Aires durante el régimen de Juan Manuel de Rosas. La obra sitúa a los paisanos dentro de un orden económico, legal, social y político marcado por la guerra recurrente, destacando los puntos de fricción entre los campesinos y el Estado (cuestiones referentes al servicio militar, al patriotismo, al delito y al castigo). Basado en copiosos registros judiciales y militares, este estudio transmite los relatos que peones y campesinos narraban a los funcionarios estatales sobre ciertas cuestiones centrales a su vida y a la nación emergente. Ellos contaron sus desplazamientos por el territorio en busca de empleo remunerado, sus experiencias en las guerras civiles; e hicieron llegar sus reclamos sobre trabajos impagos, castigos, humillaciones y separación de sus familias. También dejaron impresiones sobre el orgullo de trabajar y el significado de la pobreza. Paisanos itinerantes revela un mundo complejo que, hasta ahora, había estado oculto: el de los subalternos argentinos rurales en su confrontación con el Estado.

Ricardo Donato Salvatore es profesor plenario del Departamento de Historia en la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Es autor de Imágenes de un Imperio (Sudamericana 2006); Subalternos, derechos y la justicia penal (Gedisa 2010) y Disciplinary Conquest: U.S. Scholars in South America, 1900-1945 (Duke 2016). Es editor de Culturas Imperiales (Beatriz Viterbo 2005); Los lugares del saber (Beatriz Viterbo 2007). En colaboración, publicado las siguientes obras: The Birth of the Penitentiary in Latin America (Texas University Press 1996); Close Encounters of Empire (Duke 1998); Crime and Punishment in Latin America (Duke 2001); Caudillos Rioplatenses (Eudeba 1998, 2005); Living Standards in Latin American History (Harvard 2010); El delito y el orden en perspectiva histórica (Prohistoria 2013); y Murder and Violence in Modern Latin America (Wiley-Blackwell 2013).
