Sätze wie "Ich bin stolz, ein Deutscher zu sein" oder "Ich liebe mein Vaterland" wurden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Deutschland lange Zeit nur von Parteien des politisch rechten Spektrums oder Neo-Nazis genutzt. Wenn Politiker aus den etablierten Parteien oder Intellektuelle solche Äußerungen zur deutschen Nation öffentlich kundtaten, wurden sie in die gleiche politische Ecke eingeordnet. Nach den schrecklichen Erfahrungen des Nationalsozialismus war alles Deutsche über Jahrzehnte diskreditiert und patriotische Gefühle zu Deutschland galten als anachronistisch. Die Bundesrepublik versuchte, den Nationalstaat als Identifikationsebene zu überwinden und definierte sich als postnationale Demokratie unter Nationalstaaten. Die europäische Integration und der Kosmopolitismus wurden zu Leitbildern der Nachkriegsgesellschaft der Bundesrepublik. Jedoch waren diese international ausgerichteten Konzepte nicht in der Lage, den historisch belasteten Deutschen eine neue Identität zu verleihen und ein Gemeinschafts- und Zugehörigkeitsgefühl zu schaffen. Auch das geistige Konstrukt des Verfassungspatriotismus konnte keinen Patriotismus in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung generieren. Seit der Jahrtausendwende ist eine Zunahme des Diskurses über Ausdrücke wie Vaterland, Heimat, Identität und Patriotismus zu beobachten. Den Beginn dieses Prozesses läutete die Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands ein. Nach der Beendigung der staatlichen Trennung konnte Deutschland sich zu einem normalen Staat in Europa entwickeln und die politische Sonderstellung aufgrund der Zweistaatlichkeit und der historischen Erblasten langsam verlassen. Die nationale Identität der Deutschen hatte die Chance sich zu entwickeln und Patriotismus wurde wieder zu einem vieldiskutierten Thema in der Wissenschaft. Berufliche Tätigkeit: Der Autor war nach seinem Studium zwei Jahre im Bereich Marketing und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit in der Musikindustrie tätig und im Anschluss zwei Jahre als Wissenschaftlicher Projektleiter für eine private Fachhochschule.
