Ce travail est une monographie sur les Illyriens vus à travers leurs contacts avec le monde grec. L’objectif est d’aborder l’histoire des populations illyriennes dans une perspective qui est celle de la frontier history, et à cette fin, de réinterpréter toute la documentation disponible sans hellénocentrisme ni a priori idéologique, en cherchant à dégager les vecteurs d’interculturalité. La première partie de l’ouvrage s’attache à définir les contours géographiques et chronologiques du sujet. Dans un deuxième temps sont étudiés les lieux, les vecteurs, les occasions des contacts et la nature des échanges, en d’autres termes les facteurs d’acculturation. Sur cette base, la dernière partie vise à analyser les transformations observées dans tous les secteurs de la vie socio-culturelle. Les contacts entre populations grecques et autochtones s’articulent autour de deux temps forts: celui de l’implantation coloniale qui entraîne plutôt une hellénisation dite verticale, touchant uniquement les élites, puis celui de l’unification au sein du royaume de Pyrrhus avec une hellénisation dite horizontale, très étroitement liée au phénomène d’urbanisation et au développement des classes moyennes représentées par les marchands et les artisans. This work is a monograph on the Illyrians as seen through their contacts with the Greek world. The aim is to approach the history of Illyrian populations from a frontier history perspective, and to this end, to reinterpret all available documentation with no Hellenocentrism or ideological preconceptions, seeking to identify the vectors of interculturality. The first part of the book defines the geographical and chronological outlines of the subject. The second part examines the places, vectors, occasions of contact and nature of exchanges – in other words, the factors of acculturation. Once this basis is set, the final section analyzes the transformations observed in all areas of socio-cultural life. Contacts between the Greek and native populations are structured around two key periods: first, the colonial settlement, which led to a Hellenization referred to as “vertical”, affecting only the elite; then, the unification within the kingdom of Pyrrhus, with a “horizontal” Hellenization, closely linked to urbanization and to the development of middle classes, represented by merchants and craftsmen.
