About the Book

Power of the Powerless: Women's Work, Sexual Violence and Autonomy in Ciudad Juarez (1994-2004) Ana M. Bergareche, PhD, Centro Universitario de la Costa, Universidad de Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Foreword by Alfredo Limas Hernandez The main focus of this book is sexual violence in the northern Mexican border region. It explores the way various aspects of women's lives (their jobs, their associations, their personal networks, and other structural factors, along with subjective aspects such as their spiritual understandings) increase their potential for resisting traditional gender discourses that constrain their personal autonomy and can make it difficult for them to leave violent domestic situations. It should appeal to a variety of audiences: students, scholars, researchers, and policy makers in various disciplines. The book will appeal to advanced undergraduates (juniors and above) as well as graduate students in women's/gender/feminist studies classes, as well as sociology, anthropology, and political science. Latin American Studies, and history classes; it also has potential for religious studies courses, or ones on NGOs, civil society, and other specialized topics (including of course maquiladoras and the NIDL)."
About the Author: Ana M. Bergareche was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. She received her Phd in Gender and Development at the University of London in 2001. She has served as researcher and teacher in various Mexican academic institutions since 1994, teaching subjects related to sociology, gender, work and health. At present she works as a researcher and teacher at the University of Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Her current area of research involves the role of emotions and healing in pedagogy related to caring professions such as psychology, in particular, the use of creative expression and emotional healing methods in the educational setting as an avenue of integral knowledge (not sure if integral knowledge sounds right). Ana is the author of various magazine articles and book chapters on gender in connection with work, sexual violence, religion and empowerment in the international development context. She has been writing poetry for the last four years, and just published her first book of poetry. She is currently working on a book about the cancer journey. Dr. Bergareche speaks at conferences and other academic venues on these and related subjects.
