Platon nacio en Atenas en el 427 a. C. De familia noble, es seguro que vio en el ejercicio de la politica su propio ideal de vida, pero, segun dice el mismo, la convivencia con Socrates y la injusta condena a muerte de este le hicieron desistir de sus ambiciones. No obstante, emprendio algunos viajes con propositos politicos. En el ano 399 fue a Megara, y de alli viajo a Creta, Egipto y Cirene, retornando a Atenas hacia el 396. En el 388 emprendio su segundo viaje, esta vez a Tarento y Sicilia, donde hizo amistad con la familia del tirano de Siracusa, Dionisio I el viejo, que acabo por venderle como esclavo. Comprado y puesto en libertad por su amigo Amniceris, regreso a Atenas, donde, con el dinero del rescate que su amigo se nego a aceptar, fundo la Academia, en honor del heroe Academos, y en ella se dedico a la filosofia, a la ciencia y a la educacion de los jovenes el ano 387. La Academia platonica, pues, fue fundada con el precio de un esclavo. Volvio nuevamente a Siracusa, con el fin de poner en practica sus ideas politicas. Dionisio el Joven, que entonces reinaba alli, lo habia llamado. Era el ano 366. Fue nuevamente desterrado, sin poder hacer lo que pretendia. Todavia habria de volver una vez mas, en el 361, hasta que por fin se retiro definitivamente a Atenas, el 360, donde permanecio hasta su muerte en el 347 a.C. ---------------------------------------------------- Partiendo del principio evidente de que para saber si la virtud puede ser ensenada, es necesario saber en que consiste, (Socrates) pregunta a Protagoras si la virtud a sus ojos es una en su esencia o compuesta de partes independientes las unas de las otras, como la justicia, la templanza, el valor. El sofista se esfuerza en sostener la ultima opinion, hasta que Socrates lo obliga insensiblemente, por una cadena indisoluble de concesiones, a contradecirse a si mismo, y, en fin, a convenir, a pesar suyo, en que la virtud es una por naturaleza. Sostener que se compone de partes absolutamente distintas, es confesar, por lo pronto, que cada una de estas partes nada tiene en si de la esencia de la otra, de suerte que la justicia excluiria al valor, y la santidad a la justicia. De aqui esta consecuencia absurda: que la justicia no puede ser valiente, ni la santidad justa. En segundo lugar, si las partes de la virtud se oponen las unas a las otras, una misma cosa podria tener muchas contrarias, lo que implica contradiccion. No, la virtud es una en su esencia, una en su esfuerzo, y todas estas partes, que se separan indebidamente, no son otra cosa que modos diversos de la virtud; diversos, pero no exclusivos, contenidos y unidos en su esencia misma, como las consecuencias lo estan en su principio. Diferentes en apariencia y solamente de nombre, estas virtudes en el fondo se llaman la una a la otra, se encadenan, se asocian, y no forman mas que un todo. He aqui como Socrates, bajo la idea de virtud, abrazando todas las virtudes particulares, establece un principio, que los estoicos, despues de el, falsearon exagerandolo. Considerada de esta manera, la virtud no entra en el alma, como lo pretende Protagoras, por una ensenanza progresiva y diversa que poco a poco la penetre por el precepto y por el ejemplo, para que nazca en ella, primero la justicia y despues el valor. La virtud con sus dones diversos nace de la inspiracion de una naturaleza honesta, que por su propio esfuerzo abraza a la vez la esencia y todos los modos, debido al sentimiento innato del bien, que la precede y que la crea. Esta ciencia verdaderamente anterior y superior a la virtud, ninguno puede ensenarla, porque cada uno debe sacarla de si mismo; nace con nosotros. (P. de Azcarate, "Argumento")"
