Carl Jung werd op 26 juli 1875 als Karl Gustav II Jung geboren in Kesswil in het Zwitserse kanton Thurgau. Hij was het vierde kind van Paul Achilles Jung en Emilie Preiswerk, maar het eerste dat de vroege kindertijd overleefde, net als zijn negen jaar jongere zuster. Zijn vader, Paul Jung, was dorpsdominee van de Zwitserse gereformeerde kerk, en zijn moeder Emilie was een telg uit een rijke Zwitserse familie. Toen Carl zes maanden oud was kreeg zijn vader een betere pastorie in Laufen toegewezen en het gezin verhuisde. Ondertussen groeide de spanning tussen Paul en Emilie. Emilie, die een excentrieke en depressieve vrouw was, bracht veel tijd door in haar eigen aparte slaapkamer, waar ze naar eigen zeggen 's nachts geesten zag die haar kwamen bezoeken.
