Die Quantentheorie nahm ihren Anfang mit PLANCKS [1]* Unter suchungen des thermodynamischen Gleichgewichtes zwischen Ma terie und Strahlung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es galt, die beobachtete Energieverteilung im Spektrum der Strahlung des schwarz en Korpers zu erklaren. PLANCK sah sich dem Problem gegen iiber, zwischen der Rayleighschen Theorie, die bei tiefen Frequenzen mit der Beobachtung iibereinstimmte, und der Wienschen Theorie, die bei hohen Frequenzen zutraf, zu extrapolieren. Durch trberlegun gen, die bestenfalls als plausibel zu bezeichnen sind, gelangte er zu einer Beziehung zwischen Energiedichte und Frequenz, die iiber das ganze Spektrum hin ausgezeichnet mit dem Experiment iiberein stimmte. Die theoretische Interpretation dieser Formel verlangte, daB Strahlung der Frequenz w nur in ganzzahligen Vielfachen eines elementaren "Quantums" 'liw absorbiert oder emittiert werden kann, 27 wobei'li = 1,054 X 10 erg' sec die Plancksche Konstante ist. PLANCK neigte zu der Ansicht, daB die von ihm entdeckte atomare Struktur der Strahlung den Eigenschaften der emittierenden Materie zuzuschreiben sei. EINSTEIN [2] erst war es vorbehalten, die Relation E = 'liw zwischen Energie und Frequenz eines Quants als eine innere, von der Strahlungsquelle unabhangige Eigenschaft der Strahlung zu erkennen. Seine SchluBfolgerungen sollten, wie EINSTEIN bemerkte, experimentell durch den photoelektrischen Effekt bestatigt werden. Die trberlegungen beruhten auf der Anschauung, daB ein wohl bestimmter Energiebetrag E' erforderlich sei, um ein Elektron aus einem Metall herauszubringen."
