Désaffiliation, crise du lien sociale, anomie... les mots pour dire le malaise qui nous affecte ne manquent pas. Ils procèdent tous d'une interrogation inquiète et fébrile sur la possibilité d'un être et d'un devenir communs. Comment penser alors le sens et la nature de ce qui nous rassemble ? Nos attentes en termes de justice sociale sont une composante tout aussi déterminante du lien fragile qui associe les êtres entre eux. La justice dans la société se doit d'être également justice sociale. Quelle conception de la justice sociale garantira cependant la cohésion sociale ? A l'âge démocratique, la réponse paraît évidente: l'égalité des chances. C'est un idéal séduisant. Peut-on espérer autre chose que d'avoir, chacun, les mêmes chances, les mêmes possibilités de mobilité sociale ? Pouvons-nous désirer autre chose que la garantie que nous pourrons - qui que nous soyons - choisir véritablement notre vie. Profondément ancrée dans notre culture sociale et politique, l'égalité des chances s'impose comme égalité souveraine. Pourtant, que d'injustices commises en son nom, que d'échecs aussi ! Pour qu'une société soit juste, suffit-il que les individus aient la possibilité de s'y affronter à armes égales ? Contrairement à bien des idées reçues, la doctrine de l'égalité des chances, telle qu'elle est aujourd'hui pensée, ne permettra jamais que soit résolu le pressant problème de la décohésion sociale. C'est donc une autre égalité des chances qu'il faut envisager, une égalité des chances qui repose enfin sur la possibilité d'un égalitarisme soutenable. Cette problématique est explorée dans cet ouvrage tant sur le registre politique (de l'Etat Bismarkien au New deal ou au sarkozysme) que sur le registre philosophique (de Tocqueville à Rawls).
