The waste products generated by the rubber industry are one of the most important secondary raw materials. Finding the best ways of utilizing these is becoming increasingly more important - not only the economical point of view, but also for ecological and environmental reasons. Each of the major industries using rubber waste products (including the rubber and automative industries, building material industries, road construction, consumer goods, etc.) have different requirements, and this book looks at the multiplicity of methods used for processing scrap tyres and production wastes from the rubber industry. The authors emphasize the need to marry the disparate requirements of environmental protection with profitability. Opening with a look at the types of wastes generated (including rubber mix, cord, and vulcanized wastes), the authors discuss the formation of other materials that can be manufactured from these waste products - including corrugated asbestos boards, roofings, and floor slabs amongst other possible applications. The physical and chemical processes necessary in the reclamation of rubber wastes are reviewed from the point of view of both fine-dispersed and from heavy duty usage (such as road construction). The authors also take a look at processing by the pyrolysis technique; the book culminates with a brief look at some of the other uses to which scrap tyres can be put.
