Se intenta en este trabajo, contribuir a la reflexión crítica del rol de la mujer en su lucha y resistencia antiesclavista en Puerto Rico desde principios de siglo XIX (1806) hasta la abolición de la esclavitud en marzo de 1873. Desde la historia social se trata de reconstruir las circunstancias con las cuales tuvieron que lidiar las mujeres esclavas en búsqueda de justicia ante sus reclamos y a favor de su ideal de libertad históricamente construido. En armonía con lo anterior, se enumeran y discuten los diferentes modos o estrategias de resistencias antiesclavistas a que recurrieron las mujeres cimarronas en Puerto Rico, entre ellas, el cimarronaje rural y marítimo, denuncias ante el síndico defensor de esclavos, alcaldes y jueces de paz, corregidores y ante el gobernador de turno sobre maltrato físico e incumplimiento de parte de propietarios/as con disposiciones reglamentarias relacionadas con la libertad a través de la coartación o por testamento, entre otros. Las mujeres esclavas recurrieron al cimarronaje rural y marítimo mayormente durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX, siendo las tres primeras décadas de este periodo como los momentos de más resistencia antiesclavista en la Isla y en donde se pudo identificar la mayor cantidad de fugas rurales y marítimas en las que estaban involucradas mujeres cimarronas. Se constata que los esclavos/as recurrieron al cimarronaje marítimo con la idea de llegar inicialmente a la parte occidental de la Isla de Santo Domingo (hoy Haití) y a otros lugares que alcanzaron la abolición de la esclavitud en la región caribeña según fue avanzando el siglo XIX. También se discute, discute la complicidad y lazos de solidaridad con la resistencia antiesclavista de ciudadanos particulares, incluyendo capataces y posible de mayordomos en la ocultación de cimarrones/as. Para prevenir el cimarronaje y su ocultación por personas solidarias se adoptaron medidas cada vez más restrictivas, coercitivas y punitivas contra quienes fueran descubiertos. Muchos ciudadanos fueron multados por alcaldes. En ocasiones privados de su libertad al no poder pagar las multas. Además se intenta analizar y discutir algunas variables cuantitativas para entender y explicar algunos aspectos del cimarronaje femenino. Entre ellos el perfil físico de la mujer cimarrona en Puerto Rico. Con una muestra de 111 cimarronas, se intenta buscar respuestas a cómo eran sus rasgos físicos dominantes con relación a su color de la piel, cabello o pelo, ojos, formas de labios, dientes, cara y estatura. El análisis de estos aspectos de fisonomía apunta de manera preliminar a un perfil físico de una mujer cimarrona que no estaría lejos del resto de las mujeres esclavas, de color de la piel negro, ojos negros y grandes, y cabello negro pasa, labios gruesos, cara redonda, estatura regular y pies grandes. Además, se invita a reflexionar sobre aspectos como: la captura, recompensas, procedencia étnica, género y trabajo, señales y marcas, periodos de fugas y edad. Así también, se intenta identificar aquellos pueblos de la Isla en donde se produjeron las mayores incidencias en fugas y capturas de mujeres cimarronas; los meses y momentos del año más estratégicos para las fugas rurales y marítimas. La ruta a la libertad fue definida además por el entorno y particularidades de cada lugar y del momento histórico. Se ha documentado que la esclavitud existe desde momentos tan lejos, como la civilización babilónica, los egipcios, los asirios, los judíos, griegos, romanos, edad media y revistiendo nuevas características con la llegada de los europeos a América hasta el presente. Ha sido un fenómeno histórico amplio, diverso y muy antiguo.
