About the Book

Loss and grief can affect anyone in any organisation. For some staff, managers and leaders, dealing with them is a frequent experience because of the nature of their work. For others, it may be less frequent; but they are still somehow expected to know what to do when a death or other loss does occur - even if no-one has actually helped them learn. How best can they and their colleagues continue to work alongside someone who is grieving? What is reasonable to expect from a grieving person as they continue to go about their work? One of the things that this manual can help anyone to learn is when therapeutic support from professional counsellors or support groups might be appropriate. It is in no way a substitute for these. But it also shows what organisations can do themselves, either in response to a recent loss, or as part of their general training in preparation for such a situation arising. It will help managers, leaders, carers, and colleagues to have a greater awareness and deeper knowledge of issues around grief and loss, and will help anyone AZs behaviour to be more dignified and understanding within the workplace environment. This manual is for workplace trainers, and for university and college lecturers helping students to prepare for the workplace, in: professions that bring them regularly into contact with grief and loss: hospice workers, nurses, doctors, care home staff, the emergency services, the armed forces n professions that are expected to provide care and support in any circumstance that can arise in people AZs lives: social workers, teachers, youth workers, Connexions workers - any other organisations that are concerned about how to be as effective and sensitive as possible when issues of loss arise. For any trainer - with or without previous experience in this area - it offers: a foundation for developing understanding of how grief and loss affect people, groups, teams and organisations; and on how staff can remain effective while also being dignified and sensitive advice on how increasing awareness and understanding can be of value to the people you work with and to your organisation; help and guidance on delivering training on this with confidence n 18 exercises, 12 copiable worksheets, and presentation slides, from which you can pick and choose to deliver your training; and the opportunity to obtain the worksheets, presentation slides and case study in electronic format - free of charge - directly from RHP after you have purchased the manual.
