About the Book

Escribir sobre Prehistoria e Historia Antigua no es nada fácil para un profano en la materia como yo, cuyos campos de conocimiento son bien distintos a este. Pero tenía ganas de dedicar un libro al municipio de Salas (y, en concreto, al pueblo donde viví parte de mi juventud y donde se asentó mi familia, La Espina) y qué mejor manera que tratar de sacar a la luz, una vez más, esos retazos de historia que tenemos tan cerca de nosotros, de los que siempre hablamos pero que, en el fondo, solemos olvidar. Tal es el caso de los megalitos que se hallan diseminados por diversos promontorios de este bello municipio (sin despreciar los castros, aún vírgenes, de Peñachana y Peña Culladón), así como el achelense de la zona de Casa el Cándano, la turbera de La Molina (conocido embalse), las antiguas o canales romanos, las zonas de almacenamiento de agua, las bocaminas y otros puntos de laboreo, que se impulsaron tras finalizar la conquista del territorio indígena astur, una vez dada por finalizada la invasión por Roma (29-19 a.C.), aunque su apogeo ya sería paulatino, con un punto más álgido de producción en los siglos I y II d.C. También influyó en ello el hecho de que, en 1970, ya tuviese el privilegio de tomar contacto con una parte de ese acervo cultural, cuando (bien acompañado por José Antonio Blanco) recorrí el trayecto Muelles-Artosa (por las antiguas), con objeto de realizar un reportaje para un periódico. Este es, por tanto, un trabajo meramente divulgativo, que pretende, sin ir más lejos, dejar de manifiesto este gran patrimonio histórico que tenemos al alcance de la mano (y del que, afortunadamente, algunas instituciones ya se están encargando), pues, como decía Cicerón, la Historia es testigo de los tiempos, luz de la verdad, vida de la memoria, maestra de la vida y una prueba de la Antigüedad... Y, si me permiten, un apunte personal: sería bueno aprovechar de alguna manera tales reminiscencias del pasado, en esta línea de difundir esta destacada parte del legado histórico de Salas. Y una buena manera sería con la promoción de una ruta que pasase por esos tan emblemáticos lugares. Por ejemplo, desde Salas al gran dolmen de La Cobertoria, bajando por el Pico de los Gallos a La Espina y a la zona del achelense, ya en el límite con La Pereda, para continuar a Las Muelles, al megalito de Penausén, al alto de Calabazos (donde está el punto desde el que son visibles siete concejos), ver las antiguas (caminando por algunos de sus tramos en mejor estado), para llegar a la bocamina de La Ortosa (La Artosa), Cueva de los Gentiles, Pozo Cellericos (o Fulleiricos), monte de La Cantera (el Volcán), la gran depresión de Sobaciella, Godán y Salas... Siguiendo los consejos de la editorial se ha intentado hacer una edición ágil y coloquial, aunque no por ello se obvia el merecido y obligado reconocimiento a todas las fuentes históricas y arqueológicas consultadas. Si bien estas citas son algo más prolijas y detalladas en una de las ediciones digitales, la publicada bajo un título similar, pero no idéntico: Salas: regreso al pasado (Salas: back to the past), a la cual remito a los lectores que deseen tener acceso de forma más pormenorizada a las fuentes que se utilizaron (textos y trabajos gentilmente cedidos) para elaborar este pequeño libro divulgativo. De todas formas, véase al final de este texto la amplia bibliografía utilizada.
