About the Book

There is much in the teaching of Jesus about the Kingdom of God (or in Matthew, heaven). There are 107 references to the terms in the New Testament. In addition, the parables are best understood in this context and many of them are explicitly linked to the Kingdom by Our Lord himself. This leads one to expect that the Kingdom is something that can be seen and touched, with a visible King and a power structure. From the numerous references, particularly in the parables we would expect to find a unitary society, complete in itself and internally consistent. We would expect the Kingdom to reflect the perfection of its King establishing a spiritual relationship in which the physical realities are the carriers of the spiritual, rather than an end in themselves. We would expect the Kingdom to be open to all comers who are prepared to adapt themselves to its way of life, a life that extends throughout history and, uniquely, beyond time and space. Finally, we would expect the Kingdom to have consistent beliefs based on the sacrificial life, death and resurrection of the King, Jesus Christ the incarnate Son of God. This book describes how the classical features of the Church which we find in the Creed - One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic - overlap with with the features of the Kingdom. Since Jesus taught about the Kingdom, but founded the Church, the conclusion is that between his ascension and his second coming the Church is the visible manifestation of the Kingdom. God's power and authority are limitless. He is, by right, the King of all creation. Within creation, he has the right to expect obedience from every single human being and will judge every one of us accordingly. The Kingdom of God, as described by Jesus and put into practice by the Catholic Church, is the re-establishment of God's rule. This Kingdom is rising out of the ashes of human rejection of God, built on the solid foundations of Christ and his sacrifice. From the human point of view, it is a Kingdom based on our choice, made out of love. It is not an assertion of God's rights, though those rights remain in force. It is an offer of a loving relationship, which seeks a loving response.
