Abstract: Abstract of Thesis entitled Semantics of Authentication in Workflow Security submitted by Tang Wai Ming for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 2001 This thesis proposes a method to assure correctness of authentication in workflow. Work- flow is the enactment of procedures to achieve organizational goals. It is described in terms of people, resources and procedures in the organization. Current approaches to provide authentications in workflow are inadequate. Some have biased protection towards certain groups of participants in workflow, most noticeably the workflow designers, others have incomplete security requirement gathering or unjustified assumptions about the trustworthi- ness and integrity of some workflow participants. The proposed approach solved the problem of providing authentication in workflow by covering interests of all parties involved in authentication, thus its correctness can be justi- fied to all workflow parties. It is also less dependent on assumptions about the trustworthi- ness and integrity of workflow owner, designers, users and the system. This assurance of correctness is achieved by precisely defining requirements and rigorous validations on the well-defined semantics, thus obtaining the correct semantics of authentication that can be followed in workflow enactment. The implementation feasibility of this approach is illus- trated by showing implementation strategies of the semantics. An authentication semantics paradigm is first created from a precise definition of re- quirements built upon the formalization of real world concepts in workflow domain. This includes specifying the people, resources and procedures in a suitable level of abstraction. Requirements on authentication can then be studied separately for each party involved to cover their different interests. Semantics of authentication are developed on these user in- terests. Correctness of these semantics is rigorously validated by threat analysis. Attackers and the threats they pose are identified systematically. The threats are then specified for- mally. They are justified for their success or failure against the authentication semantics. Results from successful attacks showed that authentication semantics purely constructed from the viewpoint of workflow participants' interests can still fall prey to some attacks. This is because the interests of workflow participants by themselves are insufficient to pro- vide guidelines on the expected outcome in some indeterministic situations, which could be successfully exploited by attackers. To enhance the semantics, analysis is made on these indeterministic situations. Possible outcomes and their meanings are then created to further secure the semantics. This results in the enhanced authentication semantics. Implementation feasibility of the approach is illustrated by discussing strategies for im- plementing the paradigm and the authentication semantics created. It is shown that current technologies can enable satisfactory implementation of the semantics with only minor limi- tations. Real world workflow systems can thus adopt this approach to ensure authentication correctness. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3011082 Subjects: Workflow - Data processing
