C'est dans le Coran, noyau theologique et juridique des institutions durant plus d'un millenaire, que l'auteur trouve le corpus linguistique a partir duquel il mene son enquete. Grace aux instruments de la linguistique, et notamment les acquis de Greimas et de Courtes, il explore avec finesse et pertinence l'isotope croire, dont il isole les invariants dans les institutions, tout au long de l'histoire de la civilisation islamique. Il ne s'agit pas d'une etude d'ethno-linguistique, ni de linguistique comparee, mais bien plutot d'une archeo-linguistique a visee pour ainsi dire phenomenologique. Roshdi Rashed Ce livre est avant tout un eblouissant panorama sur la civilisation arabe et son histoire, du VIe au XVIe siecle, vue par un semioticien dont le regard acere et la puissance de synthese s'allient avec la meticulosite du philologue et l'erudition de l'historien. Et c'est en meme temps la reflexion d'un esprit directement partie prenante, par la langue et toute sa culture, a l'univers de pensee qu'il decrit a la fois de l'interieur et avec le recul que lui apporte (ou lui impose) le recours a cette langue autre--ce meta-langage --qu'est pour lui le francais. On retrouve la un peu la meme posture que celle de son maitre, Greimas, reconstruisant, lui aussi dans une langue d'adoption, les arcanes de sa propre culture et de sa langue maternelle a travers une etude non moins approfondie des mythologies lithuaniennes. La lumiere que l'un et l'autre de ces semioticiens en terre d'exil projettent sur le passe de leur terre d'origine nous aide a decouvrir ou a mieux comprendre leurs societes respectives, l'une et l'autre si proches et pourtant, en general, si mal connues et, aujourd'hui, bien souvent, si scandaleusement diffamees...Cette exploration, l'auteur la conduit d'une maniere qui, methodologiquement, tranche par rapport aux procedures habituelles. Si l'analyse conceptuelle qu'il entreprend a partir des lexemes et de leurs derivations evoque a l'evidence la demarche de Benveniste, d'ailleurs constamment cite (celui du Vocabulaire des institutions indo-europeennes, ouvrage dont la dimension comparative est reprise ici a travers la confrontation entre deux langues principales, arabe et francais, et plusieurs autres a titre accessoire), elle s'inspire non moins directement de la methode greimassienne d'analyse semique. Vient s'y ajouter une dimension dynamique essentielle grace a l'attention constamment portee a la syntaxe interactantielle qui se cache sous les mots et fait de chacun d'eux, comme disait Greimas, le support d'un petit spectacle .
