About the Book

Sheep systems are commonly grouped as intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive. The distinctions reflect resource bases, management intensity, and labor and capital profiles rather than rigid categories. Many farms blend elements of all three to handle seasonality and market timing.
Intensive Systems
Definition and Infrastructure
Intensive systems concentrate animals in controlled environments to maximize output per unit of land, labor, or time. Examples include feedlot finishing for meat lambs, zero-grazed dairy flocks with milking parlors, or high-density indoor lambing units. Infrastructure typically includes well-designed housing with airflow and insulation, mechanized feeding, automated watering, manure handling, and biosecure entry protocols.
Feeding and Performance
Rations are formulated to meet precise energy and protein targets for growth or lactation, often with total mixed rations and carefully balanced minerals. Consistent feed supply supports faster finishing, improved carcass uniformity, and predictable milk yields. Intensive dairies track somatic cell counts, milk solids, and reproductive metrics to maintain profitability.
Advantages
Predictability and throughput are key advantages. Intensive units can decouple production from weather, reduce predation risk, and achieve tight biosecurity. They are suited to regions with scarce pasture or where land is expensive but grain and by-products are accessible.
Challenges
Capital costs for buildings and equipment are substantial. Feed purchases raise exposure to commodity price volatility. Animal welfare must be actively managed through space allowances, enrichment, and careful monitoring for lameness and respiratory disease. Skilled labor and strict protocols are non-negotiable.
Semi-Intensive Systems
Definition and Infrastructure
Semi-intensive systems combine grazing with targeted supplementation and seasonal housing. Typical examples are rotationally grazed flocks that receive concentrates for finishing or flushing, and pasture-based dairies that supplement during lactation peaks or drought.
Grazing Management
Rotational or strip grazing increases pasture use efficiency and supports sward recovery. Stocking rates are matched to seasonal growth curves. Mobile fencing, laneways, and watering points reduce labor and soil compaction. Strategic use of conserved forages bridges feed gaps.
