Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Solitude and Solidarity: The History of Homosexuality in France, 1940s-1980s" Submitted by Leung Man Ki for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in January 2005 This thesis analyzes the history of homosexuality in France from the 1940s to the 1980s through various legal, medical, moral, and journalistic discourses. The state's intervention in the lives of homosexuals was apparent. Official discourse condemned homosexuality as a "corruption of youth," as "immoral" and "contagious." This thesis traces the development of the official discourse which th th pathologized homosexuality in France in the 20 century with reference to its 19 century origins. Though Anti-Sodomy Laws had been abolished in 1791, the state's persecution and prosecution of homosexuals did not cease afterwards. During the Second World War, the collaborationist Vichy regime set a higher age of sexual majority for homosexual acts than that for heterosexual acts in 1942, which demonstrated a double standard toward homosexuality and heterosexuality. Also, it transferred police files on homosexuals to Nazi Germany, which led to the deportation of French homosexuals in Alsace-Lorraine. After Liberation, the notorious 1942 Law was retained. Homosexual organizations began to appear since the 1950s, seeking to attack repression and discrimination but in 1960, Charles de Gaulle's government heightened control over homosexuality by amending a law which set a heavier punishment for public indecency for homosexual acts than that for heterosexual acts, and by passing an ordinance categorizing homosexuality as a "social plague." The 1968 Student Movement in France and the 1969 Stonewall Riot in the United States inspired a wave of militancy in the emergent gay and lesbian movement of the 1970s. An important debate over whether assimilationist or pro-difference approaches served the struggle for equality better raged into the 1980s. The 1980s brought triumph over the abrogation of the 1942 and 1960 Laws but in the same period the AIDS crisis presented a massive challenge to the solidarity of the gay community. This thesis studies discursive, legal and practical responses to the AIDS crisis by comparing the French, British and American governments actions and those of the gay community. The thesis also aims to provide a more balanced account of the recent history of homosexuality in France by setting first-hand accounts of gay activists in their historical context through references to various other sources. In this way the thesis seeks to examine why the recent history of homosexuality has been so fiercely contested and to reveal the motives behind and omissions from the narratives presented by gay activists on this controversial issue.
