About the Book

The papers presented in this volume emanate from three sessions on active experiments in space. The topics covered include wave injections from space vehicles and ground transmitters; electron and ion beams; and chemical releases from satellites and rockets. Wave injection from space is currently an active area of research. The transfer of electrostatic energy to the surrounding plasma has been observed with the use of ground based transmitters to study ULF interactions in the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Electron, ion and neutral beams have been used to excite emissions and waves in the upper atmosphere. Beam experiments are reported in this volume and future studies of stratospheric explorations are proposed. The USA NASA/DOD Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite spacecraft provided the platform for a wide range of chemical release experiments. Studies of critical ionization velocity, diamagnetic cavities, plasma structures and waves observed during the CRRES mission, are fully reported. A wide diversity of active experiments is apparent within these proceedings and the foundation is prepared for the use of new ground-based and satellite facilities using perturbational techniques in future.

Table of Contents:
Selected Papers: Preface. Wave results from OEDIPUS A (H.G. James). Modelling the plasma dynamics of the CRRES G-9 and G-10 barium releases (J.D. Huba et al). One-dimensional particle simulations of the low-frequency features in the CRIT 11 rocket experiment (O. Bolin, N. Brenning). A feasibility study on the Xenon and carbon dioxide gas release experiments on the Argos satellite (S.T. Lal et al.). In situ observations of VLF waves generated by a modulated electron beam in the ionosphere (J. Ernstmeyer et al.). Ground-based VLF measurements during pulsed electron beam emissions in the ionosphere (N.B. Myers et al.). Active plasma experiment - Project Apex (V.N. Oraevskyi, P. Triska). On the hall effect on Alfven waves in non-uniform magnetic fields and inhomogenous plasmas (L.M.B.C. Campos, N.L. Isaeva). Dust in the planetary system (E. Grun). Electrostatic charging of ring dust clouds (G.R. Wilson). Electrostatic interactions of two dielectric dust particles in the presence of plasma (J.W. Manweiler et al.). Ion irradiation experiments (G. Strazzulla et al.). Energetic particle absorption by atmosphereless satellites and rings (L.L. Hood). Dust in planetary magnetospheres (M. Horanyi). The potential of the dust grains of Comet Halley (P. Lamy et al.). The electromagnetic effects of the solar wind interaction with Phobos (M.K. Dougherty et al.). Stationary MHD waves modified by hall current coupling (T.I. Woodward, J.F. McKenzie). Imaging experiments to detect an extended sodium atmosphere on the Moon (M. Mendillo et al.). Observation of energetic lunar pick-up ions near Earth (M. Hilchenbach et al.). The new Titan's hydrogen torus (W.-H. Lip).
