Excerpt from The Stone Shiva by Manish Patel. Copyright Ac 2002. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The massed ranks of the press were swarming outside the court building. The jury's verdict had been met with shock. Headlines written days in advance would have to be re-written. Garfield Silcott, a young black hoodlum, had been found Not Guilty of murder. The jury had accepted his story that he had stabbed the Asian shopkeeper in self-defence. It was true, however, that Silcott had been holding up the corner shop in Norwood, south London. Silcott's defence had argued successfully that the shopkeeper, Sanjeev Deol, was using excessive force to defend himself and that his life was not really in any danger. In truth, it had been a life and death struggle during which the left side of Silcott's face had been sliced with his own knife. Silcott's cronies had corrupted his surname to 'Silk-Cut' as a result of his newly A-acquired status symbol scar. 'Silk-Cut' was a nickname that would pass into underworld folklore. Garfield 'Silk-Cut' Silcott would soon become London's most feared black gangster A- the Don of the Yardies. While Silcott and his defence team hammed it up for the news cameras a lone figure watched the scene from across the street. The young boy looked forlorn, for it was his father that Silcott had stabbed to death. The boy looked at Silcott as he laughed and joked with the media. Silcott looked across the street and for a moment the killer's eyes were locked with those of the boy's. The boy was clutching a pendant that hung from a gold chain around his neck. The pendant had been a gift from his father and was fashioned in the likeness of a Hindu god. "One day," the boy said to himself, "one day". Silcott was bundled into a waiting car, which was to take him to a celebration party. From the car window Silcott punched the air with triumph. "Not guilty!" he shouted as the car took off. The boy put his hands into his pockets and walked away. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in Nepal, a small state on the northern border of India, a massacre had taken place. The crown prince Bhupendra, in a fit of rage, had killed his father, the Maharajah. He had also murdered his mother and all of his siblings. The only survivor was the crown prince's uncle, the dead Maharajah's brother, who had been critically wounded. A friend of the royal family told reporters that Bhupendra was clinically dead when he was brought to hospital after turning the gun on himself. The crown prince had shot himself rather than face the consequences of his actions. His father had disapproved of his son's choice of a royal bride and Bhupendra in a drunken rage had gunned down nearly all the royal family. In the most complete version of the bloody events, media accounts and royal insiders said the heir to the throne A-angered by his family's refusal to let him marry the woman of his choice A- killed his father King Vikramaditya, his mother Queen Soraya and seven others with an automatic weapon. The Nepalese doctors could do nothing for the surviving uncle who was now next in line to the throne. A bullet was lodged too close to his heart and the Nepalese royal physician feared operating. In desperation the Nepalese government turned to a visiting British-Indian surgeon for help. Although the young Dr Ramakrishnan was in Nepal on honeymoon, he agreed to perform the dangerous operation. If Ramakrishnan was successful the throne of Nepal would be saved and the country spared mass anarchy. The weight of a nation rested on the young surgeon's shoulders but the reward for saving the last remaining claimant to Nepal's throne would be great.
