Cossmann, Bernhard, "the Joachim of the violoncello," was born at Dessau on May 17th, 1822. He received his first musical instruction from Carl Drechsler at Dessau, then Theodor Muller at Brunswick, and later with Kummer at Dresden. At the age of eighteen he went to Paris, where he became solo 'cellist at the Grand Opera. In 1841 he went to London, and in 1843 he became wcil known in Germany as a performer of the first rank. In the winter of 1847-48 he appeared at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, where he was appointed solo violoncellist, and in the following year undertook a long concert tour in England, playing in London, and at Windsor Castle; and in Ireland at the Dublin Philharmonic Society. In 1850 he went for a short time to Paris, then to Weimar (in 1852), where he became first violoncellist under Franz Liszt, by whose influence Cossmann was appointed solo violoncellist to the Grand Duke. In 1866 he was appointed Professor of his instrument at the Conservatorium at Moscow, where he was associated with Laub and Nicholas Rubinstein. In 1870 he returned to Germany, where he lived at Baden-Baden for eight years, occupying himseif a good deal during this period by composing.
