About the Book

In this book the authors describe methods for the calculation of weight functions. In the first part they discuss the accuracy and convergence behaviour of methods allowing the determination of stress intensity factors and weight functions for one- and two-dimensional cracks. They then move on to provide solutions for cracks subjected to mode-I and mode-II loading.

Table of Contents:
Chapter 1 - Stress intensity factors and weight functions Stress intensity factors; Mode-1 weight functions for one-dimensional cracks Chapter 2 - The extended Petroski-Achenbach method (PAM) Approximate weight functions for a component with an external crack; Approximate procedure for components with internal cracks; Modification of the extended Petroski-Achenbach procedure; Extension of approximate weight functions to rotationally-symmetric problems Chapter 3 - The direct adjustment method (DAM) Direct adjustment of the weight function to reference stress intensity factors and geometric conditions; Direct adjustment procedure for internal cracks; Approximative procedure for weight functions in mode-ll loading; Direct adjustment method for mixed-mode problems Chapter 4 - Accuracy, convergence and improvement of the approximate procedures The internal crack in an infinite body; The edge crack in a semi-infinite body; Highly-accurate weight functions for the edgecracked semi-infinite body; Edge cracks in a disc; Concluding remarks Chapter 5 - Two-dimensional cracks Fundamental relations; Approximative procedures; Determination of weight functions for semi-elliptical surface cracks by direct adjustment to reference stress intensity factor solutions; Approximative two-terms weight function derived from one reference case Chapter 6 - Mode-l stress intensity factors and weight functions for one-dimensional cracks in plates and bars General remarks; Influence of boundary conditions; The edge-cracked semiinfinite body; The edge-cracked plate; Compact tension specimen; The Double Cantilever Beam specimen; Double edge-cracked plate; Internal through-the-thickness crack in a plate; Crack in a finite width plate parallel to the edges Chapter 7 - Weigh function for remote tractions Determination of the weight function from the Airy stress function; Weight function for internal cracks under remote tractions Chapter 8 - Cracks in tubes Tube with an internal circumferential crack; Tube with an external circumferential crack; Tube with an axial crack Chapter 9 - Cracks in circular discs Approximate weight functions derived from stress intensity factor solutions; Weight functions based on BCM computations; Round-CT-specimen Chapter 10 - Cracks in front of internal notches Stresses at elliptical notches; Stress intensity factors and weight functions for small cracks at the root of internal notches; Special case: Circular hole in an infinite plate Chapter 11 - Cracks in front of external notches Rectangular and circular notches; Weight function for cracks ahead of sharp notches Chapter 12 - Mode-ll and mixed-mode stress intensity factors and weight functions Edge cracked plate under mode-ll loading; Mixed-mode stress intensity factors in 3-point bending; Goemetric functions for oblique edge-cracks Chapter 13 - Cracks near interfaces Weight functions for subinterface edge cracks; Weight functions for internal subinterface cracks; Weight function for a crack between two interfaces; Crack nornal to an interface; Weight functions for cracks in gradient materials Chapter 14 - Multiple cracks Weight functions for crack arrays in finite bodies; Semiinfinite body with periodical edge cracks Chapter 15 - Semielliptical surface cracks in flat plates Local stress intensity factors; Averaged stress intensity factors for cracks in plates; Partially circle shaped crack Chapter 16 - Embedded elliptical cracks Local stress intensity factors; Averaged stress intensity factors Chapter 17 - Surface cracks in rods General shape; Semi-elliptical surface cracks; Almond cracks with circular shape; Sickle cracks with circular shape Chapter 18 - Surface cracks in tubes Axial semi-elliptical surface cracks; Circumferential semi-elliptical surface cracks; Stress intensity factors and weight functions for a void with an annular crack Chapter 19 - Displacements Compliance and stress intensity factor; Calculation of crack opening displacements; Green's functions for displacements Chapter 20 - Special applications Determination of residual stresses from displacement measurements; Calculation of phase-transformation stresses ahead of crack tips in transformation-toughened ceramics; Computation of stresses near inclusions; Stress intensity factor for thermalshock problems Chapter 21 - References Chapter 22 - Appendix
