About the Book

This book presents contributions from the Tenth International Conference on Structures Under Shock and Impact (SUSI). The conference attracts participants with a wide spectrum of expertise, working across a broad range of structural impact problems through industry and academia. The difficulties associated with obtaining full dynamic properties and specifying the external dynamic loadings of materials, together with obvious time-dependent aspects, make the shock and impact behaviour of structures a challenging area of study. It is therefore important to fully utilize new and developing state-of-the-art research and ideas from theoretical, numerical and experimental studies, as well as investigations into material properties under dynamic loading conditions.Papers featured examine the interaction between blast pressure and surface or underground substructures, whether the blast is from civilian, military, dust explosions, vapour cloud detonation or other sources.Of interest to engineers from civil, military, nuclear, offshore, aeronautical, transportation and other backgrounds, the topics covered include:anti-terrorism issues; behaviour of steel structures; behaviour of structural concrete; energy absorbing issues; hazard mitigation and assessment; impact and blast loading characteristics; impact biomechanics; interaction between computational and experimental results; lifeline protection; material response to high rate loading; missile penetration and explosion; nuclear and chemical plants; protection of structures from blast loads; seismic engineering applications; structural behaviour of composites; structural crashworthiness; structural serviceability under impact loading.

Table of Contents:
Section 1: Impact and blast loading characteristics High velocity impact of a composite sandwich panel; Impact analysis of laminated and sandwich composites using a plate finite element with strain energy updating; Impact behavior of reinforced concrete slabs subjected to rock fall loading; Advances in continuum modelling of urban wall structures impact; Computational airblast modelling of commercial explosives; Impact compression and tensile testing by means of a Charpy pendulum; Laboratory scale tests for the assessment of solid explosive blast effects Section 2: Protection of structures from blast loads Blast-resistant highway bridges: design and detailing guidelines; Effectiveness of advanced coating systems for mitigating blast effects on steel components; Blast testing of CFRP and SRP strengthened RC columns Section 3: Energy absorbing issues The strain field history during plastic folding of a mild steel tube under axial loading; An analysis of the performance of foams used in hurling helmets; Numerical characterization of vermiculite-concrete mixture used as a shock absorber for a nuclear waste container Section 4: Structural crashworthiness Development of a device to increase the protection of vulnerable road users in the case of impact against heavy vehicles; Facility for performance tests of security structures to U.S. Department of State standards; Reliability of concrete columns under vehicle impact; Honeycomb sandwich material modelling for dynamic simulations of a crash-box for a racing car; Investigation of energy absorption of a GFRP composite crash box Section 5: Hazard mitigation and assessment Response of laminated arches to impact loads; Impact behaviour of geo-cells used in rock fall protection dykes Section 6: Behaviour of steel structures Analysis of the explosive loading of open-ended steel pipes; Impact behaviour of pressurised pipelines; Optimization of a car seat under impact load Section 7: Behaviour of structural concrete Importance of concrete material characterization and modelling to predicting the response of structures to shock and impact loading; A new drop weight impact machine for studying the fracture behaviour of structural concrete Section 8: Material response to high rate loading Damping function in the penetration/perforation dynamics of rigid projectiles; Melting as an extreme deformation mechanism at high strain rates; Resistance to the ballistic impact of doped zirconia; High-speed fracture behaviour of glass bottles when using underwater shockwaves Section 9: Seismic engineering applications A novel approach for seismic analysis of multi-storey buildings; Performance evaluation and damage assessment of buildings subjected to seismic loading; The Sliding Isolation Pendulum for the seismic protection of buildings; Seismic behaviour and strengthening of a vulnerable structure; Characterisation of the mechanical behaviour of the bell tower of the cathedral of San Miniato (Pisa) Section 10: Interaction between computational and experimental results Verification of the dynamic characteristics of stack structure under wind load; Optimized calculation of high strain rate stress-strain curves; Computational simulations and ballistic verification tests for 7.62mm AP and 12.7mm AP bullet impact against ceramic metal composite armours
