About the Book

Noble gases and diatomic molecules were placed inside open-cage derivatives of C60. Collaborators provided three open-cage fullerenes (OCF), denoted K13, I16, and I20. They were prepared by chemically cleaving carbon-carbon bonds that fuse the five- and six-member rings comprising C60's structure. The cages remained largely intact. Compared with C60, there were lower energy barriers for passing gaseous atoms or molecules through the permanent orifices in the OCF's. He and Ne were placed inside K13 and I16. Ar, Kr, CO, and N2 could pass through the opening in I20. Initial noble-gas insertion reactions were carried out in vessels constructed to withstand about 20 atm of internal pressure. Incorporation fractions varied from less than 1% for He and Ne to more than 30% for Ar and Kr. Higher-pressure experiments (> 100 atm) using stainless steel autoclaves were conducted during visits to Nagoya and Kyoto Universities. Very high incorporation fractions (> 80%) of Ar, Kr, CO, and N2 inside I20 were achieved. The endohedral compounds were detected using various mass spectrometric techniques, as well as 1H and 3He NMR. Studying the kinetics of guest escape allowed Arrhenius activation parameters to be determined. Further experiments measured equilibrium gas incorporation by the OCF's. Equilibrium incorporation increased dramatically as the size of the guest increased from He through Ar. This is due to the increase in the strengths of the van der Waals attractive forces between the fullerenes and their captives. In other work, carbon monoxide was placed inside pristine C60. Electronic structure calculations indicated that there should be no formal chemical bond between the fullerene cage and the encapsulated CO. The insertion reaction was carried out using a high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) method. Samples of C60 were ground with potassium cyanide and sealed with CO gas inside crimped copper tubes. The tubes were heated inside a high-pressure vessel to 650 C and 3000 atm. Less than 1% of the recovered fullerene had encapsulated a CO molecule. The CO C60 was gradually enriched by HPLC. The CO C60 content of the sample reached 5 to 10%. LDI-TOF mass and 13C NMR spectra of the endohedral compound were acquired.
