Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "A Study of Passive Sampling and Modelling Techniques for Urban Air Pollution Determination" submitted by WONG Ming-Hong Daniel for the Degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in October 1999 Since the air pollution due to road traffic has increasingly drawn public's attention in recent years, many studies on measurements and predictions of airborne pollutants have been done in Hong Kong and other cities in the world. In the present study, measurements on NO (NO + NO2) species and predictions on NO2 and CO are studied. Several airborne pollutants are reviewed, such as respirable particulates (TSP & RSP), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NO ), and carbon monoxide (CO) and the corresponding active sampling methods are presented. Passive sampling methods, in particular the passive sampler (PS) and diffusion tube are discussed in the present study. After comparing the active and passive sampling methods, the passive sampler (PS) is found to be a feasible sampling device on collecting NO pollutants. Its unique advantages, such as good mobility and ease of use, make the passive sampling free of constraint on distribution and location of sampling. The PS samples can be analyzed by using either Ion Chromatographic or UV-Spectrophotometric methods. The UV- Spectrophotometric method is chosen in the present study since it produces more consistent results and requires minimum instrumental and technical preparations comparatively. Several sets of N0 data are obtained and different trends among NO2 concentrations and parameters (e.g., sampling altitude, wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity, .., etc.) are revealed. Finally, a set of NO2 concentration measured by the PS is compared with the NO2 concentration predicted by different models. In addition, the results of field measurements of CO by the Hong Kong Environment Protection Department (EPD) are revealed in the present study for comparison purpose. Two types of pollutants are determined in the present study for modelling predictions - NO2 and CO. For each type of pollutant, three models are used; N0 - Caline4, Calculation of Air Pollution from Road Traffic (CAR) International and Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM), CO - Caline4, CAR International and Simple Graphical Screening Method (SEVIGS). The models selected for this study are simple and suitable for general use. CAR International and OSPM are determined to be most suitable for prediction of NO2 concentration under different uses and SEVIGS is the most suitable model for simulation of CO concentration among the models revealed in the present study. In addition, comments on how to improve the results obtained by the three "best fitting" models are presented. Finally, the protocols on both measurement and prediction of airborne pollutants (NO and CO) are suggested for the air quality assessment methodology in Hong Kong situation. 11 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3025232 Subjects: Air - Pollution potential - Measurement - China - Hong Kong Air quality - China - Hong Kong Spectrophotometry Air - Pollution potential - Measurement Air quality
