About the Book

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 1999 in the subject Sociology - Habitation, Urban Sociology, grade: PASS, University of Manchester, language: English, abstract: This study is concerned with the relationship between rural livelihoods, local environmental knowledge, state promotion of agricultural development and the environmenr in Alagonia and Logga, two rural communities in southern Greece, Messinia. It uses the concept of sustainability within pluralist theoretical framework in order to investigate the claims that the process of state and EC policies operate on the assumption that local agricultural systems in rural societies are homogenous. This thesis questions such generalisation by arguing that the realities of rural people are local, complex, diverse and dynamic. The study argues that social, environmental, political and cultural factors significantly affect the implementation of top-down policies on rural livelihoods.
