About the Book

The 'Third-Generation and Emerging Solar-Cell Technologies' symposium was held at the 2011 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Direct conversion of solar energy to electricity by photovoltaic (PV) devices is an important element of the next-generation green power production portfolio. Although crystalline Si is currently dominant in making solar cells, new solar cells using thin films have been emerging due to their high competitiveness in cost reduction. Even more exotic materials have generated great excitement as in, for instance, assemblies composed of quantum dots and/or wires in which quantum confinement is used as a design parameter. Dye cells and organic PVs are also being pursued as affordable and low-cost paradigms. All such new and promising materials systems present challenges associated with the efficient absorption and collection of generated carriers and the associated roadblocks stand between concept and practical implementation. This volume represents the recent advances in all above mentioned areas.

Table of Contents:
1. Absorption enhancement in plasmonic solar cells by incorporation of periodic nanopatterns Shaochen Chen; 2. Gold nanolayers embedded in zinc oxide for large area flexible photovoltaics Terry Alford; 3. Fabrication of subsurface metallic nanoparticles for enhanced carrier generation in silicon-based photovoltaics Nirag Kadakia; 4. Advanced optical modeling of thin-film silicon solar cells with 1-D periodic gratings Serge Solntsev; 5. Effective medium analysis of plasmonic silver nanoparticle films Rudi Santbergen; 6. Photoluminescence properties of core/shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots encapsulated with transparent layers for third generation photovoltaics Bahareh Sadeghimakki; 7. Synthesis and characterization of hybrid CdS/MEH-PPV nanocomposites for photovoltaic applications Leander Tapfer; 8. Photovoltaic applications of micro and nano crystalline silicon carbide Siegmund Greulich-Weber; 9. Nanodot formation in thermally annealed UHV-RTCVD grown Si1-XGeX epitaxial layers on silicon for photovoltaics Abdennaceur Karoui; 10. Improved hole collection in polymer heterojunction solar cells with DNA/pt-DNA layers Ali Bilge Guvenc; 11. Improvement of the power conversion efficiency of polymeric solar cells based on P3HT:PCBM through interfacial modification King Wong; 12.
