About the Book

Circulatory physiology is one of the fastest growing fields in basic science and practical medicine. In this edition the more important of these advances have been incorporated, as well as an estimate of their possible impacts on the care and treatment of cardiovascular patients. The volume is divided into five parts. Part 1 focuses on flow and transport for oxygen and nutritional substances. Parts 2 to 4 deal with flow and function in the brain, heart, stomach, intestine and liver. Part 5 considers the significance of pathophysiology of perfusion abnormalities in tissue and organ function. The flow and hemorheology of erythrocytes, microcirculatory disturbances in diabetes mellitus is discussed in this edition. Another major issue is ischemic and reperfusion injury. The role of oxygen-derived free radicals and ischemic tolerance in the brain is discussed as well as clinical and basic aspects of microcirculatory disturbances due to activated leukocytes, adenosine as modulator in coronary microcirculation, microcirculatory adaptation in the ischemic and reperfused heart and ischemic and reperfusion injury to the heart. This book will help to understand the current concepts of "Tissue Perfusion and Organ Function" comprehensively and suggests what should be investigated next in these fields.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Flow and transport for organ and nutritional substances: hemorheology and microcirculation in oxygen transport, A. Seiyama and T. Shiga; intravital near-infrared fluorescence microscopy with indocyanine green to visualize deep tissue microcirculation, N. Ohshima et al; autoregulation of tissue perfusion and oxygenation, H.J. Granger. Part 2 Flow and function in the brain: microcirculatory control in the brain tissue, H. Niimi; microcirculatory injury in the brain, W.I. Rosenblum; brain damage and free radicals, P.D. Hurn et al; ischemic vulnerability and tolerance in the brain, K. Kitigawa et al. Part 3 Coronary circulation and cardiac function: microcirculatory disturbances due to activated leukocytes in ischemic and reperfusion injury, B.F. Becker et al; microvascular-intersitial interactions in the regulation of coronary flow and cardiac mechanics, J.Y. Kresh et al; microcirculatory disturbances and adenosine in the heart, M. Hori and M. Kitakaze; myocardial ischemia and reperfusion injury in the field of cardiac surgery - mechanisms and protection, Y. Sawa and H. Matsuda. Part 4 Flow and function of stomach, intestine and liver: optoelectric studies on microcirculation and its effects on functions in gastrointestinal system, N. Sato et al; role of endogenous endothelin-1 in gastric mucosal injury, S. Kawano et al; neutrophil-endothelial cell interactions during ischemia/reperfusion, P.R. Kvietys et al; hepatic microcirculation as a major determinant of hepatic function, R.S. McCuskey. Part 5 Pathophysiology of perfusion abnormalities in tissue and organs; abnormalities of high density lipoprotein metabolism as a major cause of atherosclerosis, Y. Matsuzawa et al; tissue perfusion abnormalities in shock, J.-L. Vincent and H. Zhang; pancreatic microcirculation and its disturbances in diabetes, Y. Yamasaki et al; ischemia and reperfusion injury of skeletal muscle, E. Lorensen and E. Ascer.
