About the Book

During the last decade trace elements have been the target of intensive research. This interest has focused on the different aspects of toxicity, mechanisms thereof, and on the role of trace elements in nutrition, especially their essentiality in the diet of humans. Although some elements have been studied for both these aspects - essentiality and long-term toxic effects - research in these two areas has been separated. The purpose of the the International Symposium on Trace Elements in Health and Disease, held on 5-8 June 1990 in Espoo, Finland, was to gather together those who are interested in analytical, metabolic, nutritional or toxicological aspects of trace element research, with the purpose of reviewing the current state of knowledge on the relationship between trace elements and human health and disease. Special attention was given also to trace elements and other micronutrients with antioxidant properties. This volume is a compilation of the major contributions made in the Symposium.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Analytical methods and quality control: advances in the detection of trace elements in biological fluids and tissues, J.Savory and M.R.Wills; principal components analysis for the determination of ni and urine by ICP-MS, Douglas M.Templeton and Margaret-Anee Vaughan; atomic fluorescence spectrometry for the determination of mercury in biological samples, G.Vermeir, C.Vandecasteele, R.Dams; quality assurance - achievements, problems, prospects, S.S.Brown. Part 2 Exposure and exposure assessment: selenium in tap water and natural water ecosystems in Finland, Dacheng Wang et al; release of aluminium from coated saucepans, Andrew Taylor; constraints in biological monitoring, Philippe Grandjean; heavy metals in the general population - trend evaluation and interrelation with trace elements, B.Heinzow et al; trace element levels in the hair, blood, cord blood and placenta of pregnant women from central slovenia, M.Horvat et al. Part 3 Kinetics of heavy metals: cadmium toxicokinetics following long-term occupational exposure, R.A.Braithwaite et al; absorption of bismuth from two bismuth salts during "in vivo" perfusion of the rat small intestine, A.Slikkerveer, G.B. van der Voet; F.A.de Wolff; transfer of lead via rat milk and tissue uptake in the suckling offspring, I.Palminger and A.Oskarsson; milk transfer of mercury in rats given inorganic or methylmercury, J.Sundberg and A.Oskarsson. Part 4 Micronutrients in human health: micronutrients and cardiovascular disease, J.Virtamo and J.K.Huttunen; the epidemiology of selenium and human cancer, W.C.Willett et al. Part 5 Carcinogenicity and teratogenicity of metals: on the carcinogenicity of nickel and chromium and their compounds, A.Aitio and L.Tomatis; teratogenicity of Ni2+ in xenopus laevis, S.M.Hopfer et al. Part 6 Mechanisms of action of trace elements: the significance of target cells for a model of uptake and biological transformation of aNi3S2, H.F.Hildebrand et al; oxygen free radicals, other reactive species and antioxidants, J.O.Jarvisalo; free radicals, lipid peroxidation and human disease, T.L.Dormandy; metal-proteoglycan interactions in the regulation of renal mesangial cells - implications for metal-induced nephropathy, Douglas M.Templeton; application of an organ culture matrix system to neurotoxicity studies in the foetal rabbit midbrain, C.D.Hewitt et al; effects of aluminium maltol on brain tissue "in vivo" and "in vitro", M.R.Wills et al.
