At daylight the next morning, I was awakened by the tumult of an excited multitude in the streets, and by a combination of indescribable noises in the hotel. This latter seemed to be suddenly turned into an immense lunatic asylum, where every language and dialect under the sun had its representative. Bed was a farce under the circumstances, so I got up, dressed, and sent a porter to the railway station for my luggage. On descending to breakfast, all was bustle and bunting. 'The long lines of quaint houses were gaily dressed, like the yards of a ship, with hundreds of little flags, while festoons were carried across the streets from house to house, and Venetian masts, with gilded spear-tops and pendent pennons, were planted all along the line of the procession. All the colours of the rainbow were fluttering in the breeze, but ominous black clouds hung over all, and the weather-wise shook their head and looked grave. One of the first persons I met was my Constantinople friend C VEffendi. He was en grande tenue, as the Sultan's representative at the coronation, and as one of the Danube Commission. All the diplomatists and members of the Commission were in full fig likewise; the Austrian representative looking like an Englishman, in his red-tailed coat and gold lace. C Effendi seemed glad to see me, and immediately offered me his window from which to see the procession, as my window looked the other way. I gladly accepted his offer, and prepared to make a sketch.
