About the Book

People want to age gracefully in place. Aging typically is accompanied with changes in physical and cognitive abilities either from disease or simply senescence. Humans have evolved an incredible capacity to continuously and automatically adapt in response to changes in their environment. However, people may not notice the subtle changes in their physical and cognitive abilities over time and how they impact their functional abilities, that is, how well they carry out tasks important for maintaining their independence. Ubiquitous computing, by unobtrusively embedding sensing, inference, and feedback technologies in people's everyday lives, has the potential to vigilantly monitor and assess these subtle changes in functional abilities and provide important indicators of changes in people's physical, cognitive, and functional abilities. This book describes the state of the art in technology designed to assess the functional abilities of individuals in the ecologically-valid environment of their homes. The book begins with an overview of the changes in functional abilities associated with aging, followed by the how functional assessments are performed currently in practice without the help of automated technologies. The following sections of the book will include a survey of the techniques developed in research for embedded assessment of functional abilities, including task-based approaches that generate the type of assessment data currently used in clinical practice but is more continuous and ecologically-valid. The book dives into one of the most important functional abilities associated with aging, medication taking, and describes how technology has been developed to monitor and maintain adherence to medication. By providing both an overview and a specific case of computer-aided assessment, this book will help technology designers, researchers, and clinicians better understand the benefits, challenges, and impact of ubiquitous sensing embedded in our everyday lives to help people age gracefully in place.
