About the Book

English summary: The relationship between political leadership and historiography in the 12th and 13th century was the subject of a conference held by the German Historical Institute in Warsaw from March 10th to March 13th 2011. Political concepts and notions of leadership represented in the writings of mediaeval chroniclers were examined and analyzed on the basis of whether they resembled each other throughout Europe, for example due to longer standing traditions, or whether the historiographical documents reflect particular 'national' developments. This related anthology presents systematic insights which focus on reflection on the exercise and legitimization of political power in medieval Europe. Its broad and comparative approach to historiographical conceptions and their relationship to as well as their representation and reflection of political leadership provides a comprehensive overview and an important starting point for further research on real historical connections and political norms in pre-modern historiography.
