In myself I saw an iron-crowned divinity controlling the boundless empire of Self! With my own passions thus armed against me, it was a sleepless task to overawe the inward mob, and save my soul from the horrors of civil war: yet I not only effected this, but, what is more, preserved the exterior aspect of repose.
