Problematisch ist es vor allem dann, wenn eine Lehrkraft nicht ausreichendes Handlungswissen besitzt, um mit Störungen effizient umzugehen. Es wird spontan gehandelt, nach Mustern von denen man glaubt sie seien zielführend. In dieser Arbeit werden zu den verschiedenen Formen von Störungen im Unterricht jeweils passende Handlungsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt. Die Wunschbilder von Lehrkräften hinsichtlich ihrer Schüler mögen nicht immer gleich sein, aber in einem Punkt sind sie sich einig: sie wünschen sich eine Klasse mit möglichst wenig Störungen. Doch wirft man einen Blick auf den Alltag in den Klassenzimmern, so zeichnet sich ein anderes Bild ab. Es gibt die Schülerin, die gerne dazwischen ruft, den Schüler, der lieber aus dem Fenster schaut, als seinem Arbeitsauftrag nachzugehen, die Lautsprecherdurchsage aus dem Sekretariat und den Lehrer, der die Schüler bei ihrer Stillarbeit durch Zwischenbemerkungen stört. Häufig wird Unterricht sowohl für Lehrkräfte als auch für Schüler durch Störungen zur Belastungsprobe. Vor allem Berufseinsteiger müssen sich bei dem Sprung von ihrer hauptsächlich theoretischen Ausbildung in die Unterrichtspraxis mit der Realität von Unterrichtsstörungen auseinandersetzen. Aber auch erfahrene Lehrpersonen sehen sich nicht selten mit Situationen konfrontiert, bei denen ihr Erfahrungsschatz nicht ausreicht. Oft werden Störungen des Unterrichts sogar als der am meisten belastende Faktor für Lehrkräfte aufgeführt. Daher ist ein besseres Verständnis zielführender Methoden im Lehrerberuf unabdingbar.
