About the Book

Recent research in music education has found that college or conservatory students demonstrate similar self-regulated learning behaviors as those of professional musicians. However, how one becomes an independent learner is still unknown. I investigated how college music majors of different ages use self-regulated learning behaviors in their practice sessions. To study self-regulated learning among college music majors, I conducted a collective case study. To track the students' daily learning, I implemented a semi-structured diary based on an instrumental model of the self-regulated learning cycle. Through interviews, I also obtained information on their musical background and their attitude toward practicing. My study substantiated previous research showing that college music students demonstrate a wide range of self-regulatory skills. I also found that the students analyzed music according to their knowledge of music theory and that they constructed visual and aural images of the music to help them practice more effectively. My results indicate that there are some plausible transition stages in becoming a skillful self-regulated learner. These transition learning characteristics include: the approach to learning new music; the way a student uses self-guided verbalizations; the varied range of practice strategies; the way a student constructs an internal image of the music; and the way a student analyzes the music. My study suggests that self-regulated learning in instrumental practice can be more effective when students plan out their practice sessions by setting proximal goals, applying appropriate practice strategies, monitoring their playing, and self-reflecting after their practice sessions. Also, students can benefit from implementing a wide variety of practice strategies, analyzing the music, constructing a visual or aural image of the music, using self-guided verbalizations, and playing musically when they practice. Furthermore, the semi-structured practice diary proved to be an ecologically valid method to observe self-regulated learning in instrumental practice. It was also a constructive practice tool to enhance self-regulated learning among college music majors.
