Was tun Computerlinguisten? Sie untersuchen Aufbau, Bedeutung und Verwendung menschlicher Sprache, um Computer zu intelligenten Werk­ zeugen menschlicher Kommunikation zu machen. Da beißen sich zwei Absichten: das klassische geisteswissenschaftliche Erkenntnisinteresse und der technische Anwendungszweck geraten in eine produktive Auseinander­ setzung. Deren Themen und Positionen bilden den Leitfaden unserer Ein­ ladung zur Computerlinguistik. Denn da gibt es doch einen Unterschied zwischen sprechenden Men­ schen und sprechenden Maschinen, oder? Menschen reden oft recht wirr, Maschinen aber ziemlich ordentlich; Computer kennen sich schon aus, be­ vor sie sprechen, Menschen oft nicht einmal hinterher. Und doch hat man sich, lange bevor es Computer gab, menschliche Sprache oft so vorgestellt, wie sie im Computer tatsächlich funktioniert, nämlich als ein willfähriges Instrument zur Übermittlung mehr oder minder eindeutiger Informationen. Computerlinguistik zieht nur die technische Konsequenz aus der Annahme, man könne Sprache beherrschen wie ein Blasinstrument. Wer Computer­ linguistik anschaut, schaut auch sich selbst an: wie gehen wir mit Sprache um, was denken wir über sie? "De te fabula narratur", von dir handelt die Geschichte; und manchmal erzählt sie sich, wie das lateinische Passiv nahelegt, sozusagen von selbst. Automatisch sprechen, gibt's das? Das erste Kapitel eröffnet das Thema, sagt, was das Buch will und wo es lang geht. Es gibt eine Einführung in die Einführung und so denn eine ganz komprimierte übersicht über Ziele, Aufgaben, Anwendungen, Pro­ bleme, Geschichte, allerwichtigste Literatur, interdisziplinäre Einordnung, akademische Einbindung, Leistungsfähigkeit und Denkweise der Compu­ terlinguistik.
