In Zeiten rasanten technischen Fortschritts, einer immer kürzer werdender Halbwertzeit des Wissens und zunehmender Globalisierung werden die Anforderungen an das Personal in Unternehmen immer höher. Das zieht die Notwendigkeit größerer Flexibilität in betrieblicher, fachlicher und persönlicher Hinsicht an Unternehmen nach sich. Hinzu kommt, dass aufgrund des demografischen Wandels die Auswahl an jungen Arbeitnehmern, insbesondere im hochqualifizierten Bereich, tendenziell immer geringer wird. Daneben ist der Weg zur Suche in die ganze Welt offen. "Wenn der Prophet nicht zum Berg kommt, muss der Berg eben zum Propheten kommen. Das gilt auch für den Arbeitsmarkt". Noch vor einigen Jahren wurden jegliche Vorhersagen der Bevölkerungswissenschafftler zur problematischen Entwicklung der Geburtenrate und Bevölkerungszahl von den Unternehmen nicht ernst genommen, ja nahezu ignoriert. Dies lag daran, dass es dank der geburtenreichen Babyboomer Jahrgänge ausreichend Nachwuchs gab und die Unternehmen so geeignetes und qualifiziertes Personal im benötigten Rahmen rekrutieren konnten. Diese Prognosen sind nun in der Wirtschaft angekommen und stellen die Personalabteilungen vieler Unternehmen vor große Herausforderungen. Dies verlangt von Unternehmen neue Strategien (Denk- und Vorgehensweisen, um bei Bedarf neue Arbeitnehmer für sich gewinnen zu können).
